Batumi

 

Batumi, is a seaside city on the Black Sea coast and capital of the autonomous republic of Adjara, in the of southwest Georgia. With a population of 154,100 Batumi serves as an important port and a commercial center. The city is situated at the banks of a deep, naturally well-protected subtropical zone of the Batumi Bay. The first information about Batumi can be found in the works of the Greek philosopher Aristotele in the 4th century AD. In recent years Batumi has become a common travel destination for Georgian and foregn tourists.

Botanical Garden

One of the largest gardens in the world. There is a collection of over 5000 plant species, including about 2 thousand species of trees and bushes. 

 

Mountainous Adjara

 

Gonio 

A historical fortress near Batumi, Adjara, on the Black Sea Coast. The oldest reference to the fortress is by Roman Plinius Secundus (I century AD). In Greco - Roman sources, he is also known under the name of Apsaruntis. In the II century there were five Roman cohorts.

Since 2010 in Gonio fortress operates Archaeological and Architectural Museum where exhibits dating from ancient times to the XIX century are kept and exhibited. 

 

Petra Castle

A historical fortress-city in west Georgia, in the Kobuleti district. It was constructed in the VI century AD. Due to its unique military-strategic and trade-economic location the Byzantine Emperor Justinian built a city here. The most important land road was crossing the city connecting the western provinces of the Byzantine Empire to Iran and Armenia. A museum is operating in Petra Castle where archaeological discoveries and material found during excavations are kept and protected.
